Eastern ShoreMontessoriSchool
School’s Mission
Our school’s mission is to present a high quality prepared Montessori environment. We will provide learning opportunities based on everyday experiences interwoven with our Christian beliefs. The experiences are designed to promote independence, self fulfillment and social interaction. Each child will be able to pursue these opportunities at their own pace, as they are ready and have interest.
We will care for the children and teach them about their world and humankind. We will provide healthy nutrition, an interesting outdoor play environment, native plants and trees and educated teachers. We will offer music, dance, handheld instruments, and foreign language. We will offer language and reading acquisition, mathematics, geography, science and culture through our Montessori Materials. We will regularly offer Bible stories. Classrooms have multi-age groupings, which encourages a family-like atmosphere where learning can take place naturally.
We will offer extended care to meet working parents’ needs.
What is Montessori Preschool?
Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian Physician, started a school in 1906 and developed an environment and method of education for children based on her observations of them. She observed their almost effortless ability to absorb knowledge from their surroundings, as well as their tireless interest in manipulating materials. Every piece of equipment, every exercise, every method she developed was based on what she observed children to do “naturally”, by themselves, unassisted by adults.
Based on her observations, she believes that children under six have extraordinary powers of mind. They have a universal, once in a lifetime ability to absorb knowledge from their surroundings just by living, what she calls the absorbent mind. Children learn by touching and manipulating objects. In a prepared environment, they learn to work independently, based on their own initiative, which builds concentration and self discipline.
